What Fulfledge stores, and what it does not.
The short version
- You can use every lesson, exercise and review screen without signing in. Signing in is optional.
- The code you write is never sent outside this device. That does not change when you sign in.
- Which question you answered when, and whether you got it right, is stored on this device. Only if you sign in is the same record also kept on our server.
- Your learning record is never handed to anyone else, and it is never used to serve ads.
- Google and its partners may use cookies in order to serve ads.
What happens to the code you write
In Fulfledge, everything you write runs inside your own device. JavaScript, HTML and CSS run in an isolated area of the browser (a sandbox), and SQL and Python run in runtimes that run inside the browser. Your code is never sent to a server to be marked or run. There is a server that keeps your learning record, but it has no opening through which code could be sent to it.
What is stored on your device
So that you can pick your learning up where you left it, Fulfledge uses the browser's storage area (localStorage) for the following. Unless you sign in, all of them are kept only inside your own device, and none of them is sent or shared.
- Your position and unfinished code in the most recent lesson
- For the single lesson you opened last, this stores which stage and which exercise you are on, plus the unfinished code for each exercise. Opening a different lesson erases the previous record. This unfinished code is not sent to the server, even when you are signed in.
- Your answers (right or wrong, and when)
- This stores which question you answered when, and whether you got it right. It is what the review schedule, the weak-point summary and the learning record are built from. The code you wrote at the time, and whether you looked at a hint, are not stored.
- Playground drafts
- This stores the code you wrote in the Playground, so you can carry on from it the next time you open it.
You can erase these at any time with "Clear the record" on the home screen, "Clear the record" on the learning record screen, "Back to the starter code" in the Playground, or by deleting the site data from your browser settings.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional. Without it you can still read every lesson and use the exercises and the review screens in exactly the same way.
- What the server keeps
- Only which question you answered when, and whether you got it right. It is kept so that your record carries across devices. Your unfinished code and your Playground drafts never leave the device, even while you are signed in.
- How signing in works
- Authentication is handled by a service called Clerk. You can sign in with an email address or with a Google account, and in neither case does Fulfledge receive your password. If you choose Google, Google passes your email address and name to Clerk, and Google learns that you signed in to Fulfledge; sign in with an email address instead if you would rather avoid that. Neither your email address nor your name reaches the Fulfledge database: the server holds only the identifier Clerk issues for you, your display language, and your learning record.
- Answers from before you signed in
- Answers given on the device before you signed in are added to your account only after we ask you. That is so someone else's answers do not end up in your account on a borrowed or shared device.
- How to erase it
- Deleting your account also deletes the learning record kept for you on the server. The record left on the device is erased separately, with "Clear the record" described above. Clearing the device does not clear the server, so erasing both takes both actions.
Your learning record is never passed on to anyone else. It is never used to serve or target ads, and never used for anything to do with recruiting or job offers.
About the ads
To keep Fulfledge free, it carries ads from the third-party service Google AdSense. Ads appear only on the reading pages — the home screen, the course lists, and the slide part of a lesson. They do not appear on the screens where you are solving exercises, or in the Playground.
Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on your past visits. Through these cookies, information about visits to Fulfledge and to other sites may be used to decide which ads are shown, but it does not include things like your name, address, email address or phone number.
You can turn personalised ads off in Ads Settings. For third-party vendor cookies, aboutads.info also explains how to opt out. For how Google handles data, see Google's Privacy & Terms.
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a message asks for your consent to the use of cookies and to ad personalisation. You can change what you chose there at any time.
The code you write and what you study are never used to serve ads.
